Before the war, Hellen Achan lived a peaceful life with her family in their village of Pader. Hellen remembers night that changed her life completely. She was home with her mother and brothers when the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) attacked their home. They tried to take Hellen, but her mother told the soldiers that she was disabled, in hopes they would leave her alone. Because the soldiers were frustrated with them, they beat Hellen in the chest and abducted her brother, whom they eventually killed and left in a nearby bush. Hellen still feels pain today, from the beating she received that night. After this, Hellen and her family ran away to Jinja in hopes of outrunning the LRA army. While living there, Hellen says she and her family lived in “absolute poverty with no income.” Because of her connection with Suubi, Hellen is able to support herself. She now is married and together they have two children. In addition, Hellen’s husband has four children from another woman that live in their home, too. She is able to support herself and her children with or without the help of her husband. Hellen describes her involvement with Suubi as giving her “a glimpse of hope in a better tomorrow.”
