Last week we shared about the first day of training on sustainable cooking methods with Solar Cookers International. The story continues when we woke up on Monday and it was unfortunately cloudy. It started to rain as we ate breakfast and was pouring by the time we were loading the clean water jerrycans in the truck with the parabolic cooker. Undeterred, we slid along the muddy road to Danida and found 5 tough Suubi ladies waiting for us. If the rain bothered John and Julius, we couldn’t tell. They immediately launched into a side-by-side comparison of the regular, metal charcoal stove used by most Suubi ladies and the efficient, clay-lined charcoal stove from Kenya. The ladies were impressed that the efficient stove combined with the fireless basket cooked rice and meat with half the charcoal in less time than a regular stove. The sun came out in the afternoon and we were able to heat water with both the parabolic cooker and the CookIt reflector. At the end of each day we passed out the clean water jerrycans and discussed the best methods for cleaning and caring for them.
