Light Gives Heat Staff in Uganda continue the process of utilizing a recent grant to bring solar cookers to every Epoh Tailor, Suubi woman and their families. After a tutorial on the uses and benefits of solar cooking from Solar Cookers International, LGH Staff, Epoh tailors and Suubi women began building their own fire-less baskets. Each basket is double-lined with fabric and insulation. This method for cooking cuts out pro-longed use of fuel that would be used in a typical way of cooking. To use this basket, the beans or rice, for example, would be boiled on a stove or over a fire for a short amount of time and then placed into the insulated basket to finish cooking. Because of the insulation and build of the basket, the heat is kept inside and cooks the food thoroughly. This is not the only type of cooker that will be implemented. In April, representatives of Solar Cookers International will travel from Kenya to Jinja to teach an extensive training on solar cookers of all varieties. After completion, Epoh, Suubi & LGH Staff will work towards the goal of providing each person with these new, energy saving cookers.
