Uganda Volunteer Light Gives Heat Lauren

What is your role with LGH?
I am a general volunteer at Light Gives Heat. As a volunteer we all have many different responsibilities. Some of mine include helping with buying, English Club and Breakfast Club. In particular at the moment I'm working on the Solar Project as well as other projects and ideas of development for the community of ladies we work with.

Where are you from and what is the biggest cultural difference between there and Uganda?
I'm from England. The biggest cultural difference here is timekeeping and the lack of it! This is an aspect that I have struggled with over the last 7 months, if you say 2pm then this can mean any time from 2pm- 4pm. I have learned to no longer get annoyed about this as it is a cultural difference yet I can't help thinking that if people were more time conscious and motivated then development in Uganda would progress much quicker.

How did you hear about LGH?
I was working in another part of Uganda for an HIV/AIDS charity when my boyfriend got a job with an NGO in Jinja. Before moving I was desperately researching different organizations that works with Refugee communities as that is my background in Jinja. I stumbled across LGH on the internet, after reading about how they work with IDPs I organized a visit to the organization and didn't leave!

What are some of your hobbies?
Due to my family and upbringing, travelling is in my blood and has given me that itchy feet feeling of always wanting to try new things, new experiences and meeting different types of people from across the globe. On a more relaxing side I enjoy cooking and creating new goodies in the kitchen (have learnt to be more creative in Uganda as I only have a stove and no oven) sometimes successfully and sometimes not!! It's all trial and error!

If you could pick your 5 dream Jeopardy categories, what would they be?
General pointless but interesting trivia!, Geography, Gardening, Mad Men, Bus routes of London
