Light Gives Heat Uganda Volunteers

What is your role with LGH?
I’m a volunteer in Uganda with LGH. This is my second summer working in Uganda with LGH. Some of my main responsibilities here are measuring the necklaces on Thursday when we have our buying meeting, counting stoppers and beads, and baking cakes using the solar cooker.

Where are you from and what is the biggest cultural difference between there and
Uganda?

I’m from Conyers, Georgia. The biggest cultural difference that I’ve noticed is things seem to move slower here. Sometimes I really enjoy this because it gives you more time to sit, talk, and get to know people. Other times it can be really frustrating because things never start on time and no one seems to worry about that. We refer to it as “African time.”

How did you hear about LGH?
I was at an Invisible Children’s event at my university and I mentioned to their interns that I really wanted to go to Uganda. They said I should look into LGH. That night I looked up the website, started my application and before I knew it I was on my way to Jinja, Uganda.

What are some of your hobbies?
I love working with kids, especially at the Boys & girls Club I work at in the US and at the boy’s home I volunteer at in Uganda. I also love playing card games, reading, watching movies, meeting new people, and spending time with my family and friends.

If you could pick your 5 dream Jeopardy categories, what would they be?
Disney movie characters, name that musical, books of the Bible, name that Friends episode, and name that Suubi woman.
