LRA Massacres in the Congo

Joseph Kony: leader of the LRA

The Lord's Resistance Army, which is a rebel group that came from Northern Uganda, has recently caused a lot of pain and trauma to the people of Congo. The LRA has entered the Congo and committed all sorts of horrors against civilians, ranging from burning villages, rapes, to other violence as extreme as cutting the lips off of the women in the villages. They stop at nothing to harm and get their way with people. Two months ago, 100 people were massacred in the Congo and this past December, 321 civilians were killed, which is the largest incident that has occurred in the LRA's history.

The only good news to be found involving the LRA is the further movement of the passing of the 'LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act'. The bill passed through the House of Foreign Affairs Committee. The next step toward passing this bill is for it to go successfully through the House of Representatives, and after that to have President Obama sign the bill. This Act will help stop further tragedies from occurring to the people of Uganda. Northern Ugandans have been dealing with massacres and traumas such as the ones listed above for about a quarter of a century, and people in organizations like Resolve Uganda and Invisible Children had enough of it, and decided to take action with this bill. The LRA must being seeing that it is not going to be successful in Uganda and have moved on to the Congo, where hopefully it will be forced out of quickly before more lives are lost.
