Mushroom Growing

Light Gives Heat was awarded a $10,000 grant through the ERM Foundation. This is allowing training in various income generating skills for the Suubi Community in Uganda. The first project, Mushroom Growing, started last week! Everyone was very excited.

There was a lot interest in the training from the 93 women....so a decided group of 10 were chosen for the pilot training with the hope of the chosen ladies to w eventually deliver training to the rest of the Suubi group. The climatic conditions in Uganda are perfect for growing the oyster mushroom species and can be sold fresh or dry for a good amount of money.

The training in the preparation of growing mushrooms took place over 5 days, it involved buying and cleaning a sack of cotton, leaving it to dry, steaming it, then placing in black plastic bags with placing the mushroom spores in each plastic bag. The spores should start sprouting in 3 weeks and continue to grow and harvest for another 3 months offering the women the chance to make a good profit. We will revisit the mushroom project in 3 weeks when the mushrooms will hopefully be flourishing!
