Over the last five months Light Gives Heat in Uganda has built up a strong relationship with Rose Kigere, who is from the Women's Rights Initiative in Jinja. Initially we got into contact with Rose to deliver some important training sessions on domestic violence and women's rights to our Suubi community. It seems domestic violence is an area which does not get much attention, we found it very challenging actually finding an organization or even any information which deals in this area. After talking to Rose and her colleagues it turns out that not only are there a limited amount of organizations which deal with women's rights in the whole of Uganda but also at current in Jinja there is no shelter or space for victims of domestic violence to flee to. Not having a safe space for these women really does hinder their personal progress.

Rose's three week training sessions with our Suubi community proved to be a great success. Rose has a talent of delivering difficult topics in a very personal and approachable way whilst simultaneously offering solutions. Six of our ladies were so inspired by Rose that they underwent training with her to become community counselors.

These superb six women are near the end of their training. They now meet monthly with Rose in one of our lady's houses. Soon they will be at their community's service offering help and support to women experiencing trauma. It really is amazing observing the training, seeing six women growing and becoming more articulate, confident and above all powerful.

Rose really is doing a great thing here in Jinja, to see what she is up to please visit her at:
