On the 16th of June, we were lucky enough to have Sherry Grigsby, from the organization Eyes on Africa, join us in Jinja to help test the women’s eyes and hand out glasses to those who needed for free! Sherry happened to be on her way to Uganda when I first contacted her asking for some information about Eyes on Africa. Sherry was excited to come to Jinja and help our women out. Sherry arrived with two assistants, Irene, and Dao Thursday morning. She shared with the staff and volunteers the story of Eyes on Africa, which she started herself, and she also explained to everyone how to assess one’s eyes. The glasses Sherry hands out and distributes are only reading/magnification glasses. She say’s it becomes very complicated to deal with prescription eyeglasses and anyone can learn how to properly assess and distribute reading glasses. After a pleasant lunch with our new acquaintances, we piled into Sherry’s van and headed off to Santa’s house for the afternoon of distributing glasses and our weekly buying meeting. A large group of women were sitting under the tree rolling beads, waiting for our arrival. With Santa’s help we got some tables and chairs and benches all set up and were ready to begin. Two by Two Sherry and I assessed each woman’s eyes and Irene distributed the appropriate glasses to them. Within two hours Sherry and I had gotten through all the women of SUUBI that wanted to have their eyes assessed. Overall we handed out about 60 pairs of glasses. It was so great to see the smiles on each woman’s face when it became apparent that they could finally see clearly when reading.
