Blog entry from Corey Collier of World Bicycle Relief recapping the first day of the Brasil race.

I have arrived in Chapada Damantina, Brazil, approx 500km West of Salvador, Brazil for the 2011 Brazil Ride - mountain bike stage race. I have been given the opportunity to race the Brazil Ride to help raise awareness and funds to purchase World Bicycle Relief bicycles for the 115 women producers of Light Gives Heat.

I must say, what little I've seen of Brazil so far has been absolutely beautiful and amazing! The people have been very friendly, the beaches are spectacular, and the mountains are stunning. We arrived in Chapada Damantina National Park yesterday after an 8hr bus ride west of Salvador. Today was stage one of the race. A very difficult prologue through an old village of Brazil. A prologue in bicycle racing is just like the word means, a little introduction or teaser as to what comes ahead. It was very technical and even more challenging with fact that my team mate and I have no communication. He speaks no English and I, of course speak no Portugues. If today was just a taste of what lies ahead, this is going to be the biggest challenge I've ever faced.

For the past several years I have raced a bike to reach the next level, to step on the top step, to focus on what would make me the best athlete I could be. But as Fall approaches and the leaves change color, I have also turned a new leaf. This time I am riding for others, I am not riding for myself. I am riding for the women in Uganda. I am riding to provide them with an opportunity, one that will make life just a little bit easier for them and bring a smile to their faces. I love to ride a bike, and I love that I can share the power and freedom of a bike with others around the world.

But in order to empower these inspiring Ugandan women with bicycles, we need your support! To provide each of these women a bicycle, we need to raise approximately $11,000. Pledging as little as 1 cent per mile for a total of 3.62 is less than a coffee. This is going to be the most challenging race I have ever competed in, but knowing that I have your support and knowing that I am raising money to change lives will push me on to the finish. I am willing put forth every effort to complete this 362 mile mountain bike race to earn your pledge! Please be a part of this wonderful opportunity with us by making a pledge. Give a bike, change a life!

Corey Collier
